When people
think of the alchemists of the middle ages, the image that most
often comes to mind is that of an old hermit in some
high tower
or deep basement, searching for a way to turn lead into gold.
The truth of the matter is, of course, far more complex – and
more intriguing as well.
The science of
Alchemy goes back to ancient Egypt and China, and continues through
the Roman civilization and the Middle
Ages, up to the Renaissance.
The basic philosophy behind it is simple at its core:
perfection. Alchemists believed that everything in the universe
has
a perfect form that can
be attained through the application of science and reason.
Hence, the human body in its perfect form is vital,
free of disease,
and immortal.
The perfected metal is incorruptible and untarnished
(gold). In pursuit of these elusive elements, alchemists catalogued
the
natural world,
including all of the then-known medicines; discovered
phosphorescence;
catalogued the properties of all of the metals; theorized
about atoms and molecules; and, eventually, laid the
foundations for
modern chemistry
and pharmacology. During the Middle Ages, Alchemy took
on an outwardly mystical aspect, as the Church began to frown
upon it as somehow
diabolical. Alchemists developed a secret language,
couched in odd parables and
symbols, to hide their work from prying eyes.
Yet, there was
certainly something of the mystical in Alchemy. It was a glass
through which the world, in the very
attempt to explain its
workings, became ever more wondrous to the eyes of
the seeker. As new discoveries were made, the complexities
of the natural
world delighted
and astonished ever more.
It is in this
spirit that The Alchemy Group was born. Like the Alchemists of
old, we seek
to find the perfect
blending
of knowledge
and wonder,
of power and simplicity. In exploring your business
needs, we strive to find that confluence of elements
that will
result in – well,
perfection!
